Burgas Airport Renovation in Winter 2025/2026

Burgas Airport Runway Reconstruction 2025–2026 – Modernization and Travel Updates

After more than four decades of active operation, Burgas Airport is closing its main runway for a full rehabilitation. This is the largest infrastructure project undertaken by the airport since its opening. The renovation is scheduled to take place during the winter period of 2025–2026, when passenger traffic is at its lowest, in order to minimize disruption for tourists and airlines.

The decision for reconstruction was made by the concessionaire Fraport Twin Star Airport Management, the company that operates both Burgas and Varna airports. The project involves a complete replacement of the runway pavement, upgrades to the drainage and lighting systems, modernization of navigation and safety equipment, and the construction of new safety zones.

The total investment is estimated at over 50 million euros, fully financed by the concessionaire. According to airport management, once the rehabilitation is completed, Burgas Airport will have a runway that meets the highest international standards for safety and operational efficiency. The upgraded infrastructure will allow the airport to handle larger aircraft and increase its capacity during the busy summer season.

The renovation works are part of the long-term development strategy of Burgas Airport, which serves as a key gateway for tourists visiting Bulgaria’s Southern Black Sea coast. In recent years, the airport has reported steady growth in international flights, particularly from the United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries. Following modernization, it is expected to attract more airlines and improve accessibility to popular seaside resorts such as Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Sozopol, and Primorsko.

The runway closure will be temporary and is planned for the months between November and April, when there is no active tourist season. During this period, most flights will be redirected to Varna Airport. Passengers planning to travel to Burgas in winter will be informed in advance by their airlines about possible schedule changes.

Local authorities have expressed strong support for the project, emphasizing that the runway rehabilitation is vital for the region’s development and for strengthening the Southern Black Sea coast as a competitive tourist destination.

The modernized runway is expected to be operational before the start of the 2026 summer season. With this upgrade, Burgas Airport will enter a new stage of development — offering higher safety standards, improved infrastructure, and the capacity to welcome even more guests from around the world.
