London International Airport (IATA code LHR), which is commonly known as London Heathrow Airport, is positioned in the Hillingdon Borough in London, approximately 22 km west of Central London. It is ranked as the busiest airport in the United Kingdom in terms of traffic of passengers and the fourth busiest airport on the globe serving the highest number of international passengers in the world. Operated by BBA Limited, along with other five airports in the United Kingdom, London Heathrow Airport is the main base for British Airways, BMI and Virgin Atlantic Airways. The airport has two parallel runways and four operational terminals. The newest Terminal 5 was officially dedicated and opened by Queen Elizabeth II in the spring of 2008. Currently, Terminal 2 is undergoing renovations and shall come with a new terminal building scheduled for year 2014, while Terminals 3 and 4 have been refurbished in the period 2007-2009. Terminals 1 and 3 are connected by underground walkways and are close to each other, the transfers to Terminals 4 and 5 is done by the Heathrow Express train and is free-of-charge. Heathrow Airport is among the seven airports that serve London and the area, together with Gatwick, Stansted, Biggin Hill, Luton, Southend and City. It serves more than 90 airlines that cover 170 destinations around the world, handling more than 67 million passengers a year. The airport has modern conference and business facilities, executive lounges, facilities for passengers with disabilities, ATM machines, numerous restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs, as well as a wide choice of shops. London Heathrow Airport could be reached by regular train service with the Heathrow Express to London Paddington Station and by the London Underground’s Piccadilly Line to central London. In addition to that, the airport could be reached by several bus lines and coaches, and further by the licensed black cabs, which are available outside the terminals.
