Located 16 kms from the city of Funchal on Madeira Island, is to be found the International Airport "Funchal" (IATA code FNC), which is one of the largest airports in Portugal. It has one runway and one terminal with 16 gates and 40 check-in counters. Great part of the terminal is located underground and because of this, passengers must travel on foot or by bus to the airplanes. The International Airport "Funchal" is considered to be among of the hardest airports to land at in the world due to its geographical structure, because of which the landing requires complicated maneuvers.
