The prime airport in the Maldives, Male International Airport (IATA code MLE) is positioned on Hulhule Island, close to the capital island Male on which it is named. The airport serves as the main gateway to the tourist destination the Maldives and offers connections to the main airports around the world. There is an agreement between the new operator and the local government for a renovation of the airport that is to be completed by year 2014. The development plans include construction of a new terminal and a separate cargo terminal. Currently, the airport has one terminal and one runway. The onsite airport facilities include facilities for the disabled passengers, a hotel set next to the airport, a bank office. There are also several restaurants, duty-free shops, first-aid center. There is no car parking area and no offices of car rental companies, as the airport is not accessible by road. Male International Airport could be accessed by air and by ferryboat service.
